Every guide to personalised products ends with the same advice: use both words. That is true and unhelpful, because a title leads with one word and a tag holds one phrase, so at some point you choose. This post measures the choice. It reads what Etsy itself says about the words, counts how often each appears in 24,861 Google queries made around Etsy products, in 9,431 real page-1 titles, and in the Etsy result counts and five-year demand shape for the same item written both ways. Engraved and monogram are in the comparison because sellers keep asking; the data answers them quickly.
The short version
- Etsy: ‘If you sell personalised or custom items, be sure to add some tag phrases that contain those words’ — and regional spellings are matched, so one spelling is enough.
- Google queries around Etsy products: ‘custom’ 348, ‘personalized’ 261, ‘name’ 173, ‘monogram’ 4, ‘engraved’ 1 (of 24,861 top queries).
- Page 1: ‘custom’ in 8.2% of titles, ‘personalized’ 6.6%, ‘engraved’ 0.8%, ‘monogram’ 0.2%.
- Same product, two words: ‘custom necklace’ 513k results vs ‘personalized necklace’ 304k — the custom field is bigger, the personalized one grows faster (+188% vs +107% YoY).
- Both big words peak in February and April — they are gift-season words. Engraved and monogram are techniques, not search heads.
Lead the title with the word that describes what the buyer actually gets — ‘custom’ if they choose options, ‘personalized’ if their name or date goes on it — and use the other word in a tag phrase, as Etsy itself suggests. Across what people type into Google around Etsy products, ‘custom’ appears a third more often than ‘personalized’; on real page 1 titles custom leads 8.2% to 6.6%. On the same product, the custom field on Etsy is larger (513,153 results for ‘custom necklace’ vs 304,241 for ‘personalized necklace’) while the personalized phrase is growing faster. ‘Engraved’ and ‘monogram’ barely register as search words (1 and 4 of 24,861 queries) — they belong in a materials-and-techniques tag, not the title lead. Pick one spelling: Etsy matches regional spellings automatically. 01What Etsy says about the words
Etsy's Keywords 101 (as of August 2025, read 6 November 2026) addresses this directly in its list of tag types. Under ‘Materials and techniques’: ‘If you sell personalised or custom items, be sure to add some tag phrases that contain those words. Get specific and describe the techniques or methods you use.’ Its examples are ‘custom embroidery’ and ‘personalised tumbler’ — note that both are phrases, and that Etsy uses the two words interchangeably in the same sentence.
Two more rules settle the spelling question. On regional spellings: ‘If shoppers use regional spellings like jewellery in their search, we'll still show them listings tagged “Jewellery”.’ Personalised and personalized are the same kind of pair, so a listing tagged with one is shown for the other; a second tag for the other spelling is a wasted slot under Etsy's ‘Don't repeat tags’ rule. And on single words: ‘“custom bracelet” is stronger than “custom” and “bracelet”’ — whichever word you choose, it goes into a phrase with the product, never alone. The complete tags guide has the full rulebook.
02What people type into Google around Etsy products
For 5,675 Etsy keywords with a Google Trends profile in our keyword store, Google also returns the top queries searched around each one — 24,861 of them, plus 19,025 rising queries. Counting the four words in those: ‘custom’ appears in 348 top queries and 223 rising ones; ‘personalized’ in 261 and 145; ‘name’ (as in name necklace, name sign) in 173 and 130; ‘personalised’ in 17 and 4; ‘monogram’ in 4 and 1; ‘engraved’ in 1 and 3.
These are Google searches, not Etsy searches, and they are counts of distinct queries, not volumes — so read them as how often each word occurs in the phrases people build, not how many people build them. On that reading the picture is clear: custom and personalized are both common, custom more so; ‘name’ is the third real search word and is often what buyers mean by personalized; engraved and monogram are almost absent from how people phrase a search. The small autocomplete sample we hold from Etsy itself is too seeded with these words to be fair evidence, so it is left out.
Rising queries tell the same story: custom 223, personalized 145, name 130, engraved 3, monogram 1.
03What page 1 looks like
Across 9,431 listing cards from 162 real Etsy searches captured logged-out between September and November 2026, ‘custom’ appears in 8.2% of page-1 titles, ‘personalized’ in 6.6%, ‘name’ in 2.9%, ‘engraved’ in 0.8%, ‘personalised’ in 0.7%, ‘monogram’ in 0.2%. The searches were the ones sellers were researching this autumn — gifts, decor, seasonal and digital — not a personalisation-only set, which is why the shares are modest; the ranking between the words is the point.
The same pattern shows in listings written with ListifyAI this year (4,733): ‘custom’ and ‘personalized’ each appear in 5.4% of listings' tags, ‘engraved’ in 0.9%, ‘monogram’ in 0.2%. Sellers, buyers and page 1 agree on the hierarchy. The only word doing real work for engraved items is the product word next to it.
Page 1 agrees with Google: custom leads, personalized follows, engraved and monogram are rare.
Custom is the bigger door. Personalized is the faster-growing one. Engraved is what you say about the product once the buyer is already there.
04Head to head on the same product
The fairest test is one item, two words, read from Etsy itself. From our keyword store (US reads, October–November 2026):
- ‘personalized necklace’: 304,241 results on Etsy; Google demand rising, +188% year over year; peak month April. ‘custom necklace’: 513,153 results; rising, +107%; peak month April.
- ‘personalized jewelry’: 679,495 results; rising, +210%; peak February. ‘custom jewelry’: 1,521,514 results; rising, +16%; peak February.
- ‘personalized gift’: 822,493 results; rising, +85%; peak February. ‘custom mug’: 501,410 results; rising, +76%; peak December.
Two things repeat. The custom version of a phrase has the larger field — 1.7 to 2.2 times the listings — which means more competition and, usually, more searches behind it. The personalized version is growing faster year over year in every pair we hold. And both words peak in February and April: Valentine's Day and the Mother's Day run-up. They are gift-season words, and the five-year shape of ‘personalized necklace’ below shows how sharp that is. A listing built on either word should be live by January and again by early March; when to list on Etsy turns the shape into dates.
Two peaks, April and February: Mother’s Day and Valentine’s. The same shape appears for ‘custom necklace’ (513,153 results, +107%). A gift word is a seasonal word.
The custom field is 1.7–2.2× larger; the personalized phrase grows faster year over year (+188% vs +107%, +210% vs +16%).
05Direction and season across the whole family
Widening from pairs to families: 115 keywords in our store contain ‘personalized’ and have a Google Trends profile — 49.6% are rising, and their peak months cluster in April (32 keywords), February (26) and November (15). 122 contain ‘custom’ — 47.5% rising, peaks in April (44), February (23) and May (19). The two families behave almost identically: strong, seasonal, gift-driven. The ‘monogram’ family is 12 keywords with 8% rising; ‘engraved’ is 5 keywords with none rising — too small to chart, but consistent with everything above. If you sell engraved or monogrammed items, the search demand you are competing for is the ‘personalized’ and ‘custom’ demand; engraving is the how, not the what.
The third word in the data deserves its own line. ‘name’ appears in 173 top queries and 130 rising ones — more than ‘personalised’, ‘engraved’ and ‘monogram’ combined — and in 2.9% of page-1 titles. Buyers who want a name on something often type the thing they want, not the category of personalisation: ‘name necklace’, ‘name sign’, ‘name puzzle’. A ‘name’ phrase in the tags catches that buyer whichever of the two big words leads your title, and it is a different search from both, which is exactly what Etsy's ‘don't repeat tags’ rule asks a slot to be.
06How to spend the slots
A title leads with one word, tags hold phrases, and the description explains the rest. Spend them like this.
- Title: the word that matches what the buyer does. ‘Custom’ when they pick from options (colour, size, wording); ‘personalized’ when their own name, date or photo goes on it. Both when both are true — ‘Custom Name Necklace, Personalized Gold Bar Pendant’ — once each, never stacked.
- Tags: the other word in its own phrase (Etsy's ‘custom embroidery’, ‘personalised tumbler’ pattern), plus ‘name’ phrases where they fit (‘name necklace’, ‘name sign’), plus one recipient and one occasion phrase from the gift season the data shows.
- Engraved and monogram: one tag each as a technique (‘engraved bar necklace’, ‘monogram tote bag’), in the description as a feature, not as the title's lead.
- Spelling: one. Etsy matches the other; the slot is better spent on a different phrase.
- Before committing: check the two phrases for your product on real demand and the live page 1 — Keyword Research shows the five-year shape, the direction and who is on page 1 for each, and the free Keyword History Explorer shows the shape with no account.
