Free Etsy About Section Generator

The page buyers open right before they decide whether to trust you. Tell us about your shop in a few lines and get three different versions of your story — pick the one that sounds like you.

The blank box almost every Etsy seller skips

Your About section is the story page of your shop — Etsy gives you up to 5,000 characters to explain who you are, how the work gets made, and why you started. It is one of the few places on Etsy where you are not competing on price or keywords, only on being a person.

It is also the box most sellers leave empty, or fill with a single line: “Welcome to my shop, thanks for visiting!” That is a wasted page. A shopper about to spend $40 on something handmade by a stranger is looking for a reason to believe the item will arrive and be as good as the photos. The About section is where they look.

Writing about yourself is genuinely hard, which is why the box stays empty. So this tool does not hand you one generic draft — it gives you three different angles on the same shop: how it started, how the work is made, and who it is for. One of them will sound like you. Take it, change the bits that are not quite right, and paste it in.

How it works

✍️
Tell it about your shop
What you make, how, where, and why you started. Rough notes are fine — full sentences are not required.
🎭
Get three angles
Origin story, craft and process, and who the work is for. Same shop, three ways in.
📋
Paste it into Etsy
Shop Manager → Settings → About your shop. Add your photos and video there too while you are in it.

What makes these different from a template

🗣
First person, plain voice
Written as one maker talking, not a brand talking about itself in the third person.
🔎
Concrete over flowery
Materials, technique and time — the details that read as true — instead of a pile of adjectives.
🚫
Nothing invented
No fake awards, press mentions, years in business or sales figures. Only what you actually told it.

How to write an About section that earns the sale

Answer the question they are silently asking
Nobody reads an About section out of curiosity. They read it because they are half-decided and want a reason to commit. Tell them who makes the item, where, and what care goes into it. That is the reassurance they came for.
Specifics beat adjectives, every time
"Lovingly handcrafted with premium materials" says nothing — every shop claims it. "Each mug is wheel-thrown, dried for four days, then fired twice" says the same thing and is believable, because only someone who does it would know it.
Start after the greeting
"Welcome to my shop!" is a wasted opening line — it tells the reader nothing they did not already know from being on the page. Open on the work, the moment you started, or the person you make for.
Your shop page gets indexed too
Etsy's own SEO guidance covers shop pages, not just listings, so the words you use here — the craft, the materials, the style — are part of how your shop is understood in search. Write naturally and the keywords come along on their own.
Do not stretch the truth
If you do not have a workshop, a team, or ten years behind you, do not write them in. A buyer who reads a grand story and receives a parcel from a spare bedroom feels misled. A small, honest story converts better than a big, borrowed one.

Example

Illustrative — not your data

Turn a few rough lines about your shop into a story worth reading:

What you tell it

I hand-pour soy candles in small batches from my kitchen in Devon. Started in 2021 after my daughter reacted to shop-bought ones. Natural essential oils only, no synthetics.

About section (one of 3 angles)
It started with a headache that would not go away. Every shop-bought candle in the house set my daughter off, so in 2021 I began pouring my own at the kitchen table in Devon — soy wax, essential oils, nothing synthetic. The first batch was terrible. The twentieth was not. I still pour in small batches, a few dozen at a time, because it is the only way I can check each one myself.

Illustrative output. Your result is generated from your own product description.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an Etsy About section be?
Etsy allows up to 5,000 characters, but you do not need anywhere near that. Around 120 to 200 words is the sweet spot for most shops — enough to tell a real story, short enough that a shopper deciding between two shops will actually read it to the end.
Where do I add my About section on Etsy?
Shop Manager → Settings → About your shop. That is also where you add the photos and the video for the section, and where you list shop members. Paste the text in, save, and check how it reads on your live shop page.
Does the About section affect Etsy SEO?
Indirectly. Etsy’s SEO guidance covers shop pages as well as listings, so the words describing your craft and materials are part of how your shop is understood. The bigger effect is on conversion — a shopper who reads a real story is more likely to buy than one who finds an empty box.
What should I actually write about?
How you started, how the work is made, and who it is for. The details that only you would know are the ones that convince: the material you settled on after trying three, the step that takes longest, the customer who asked for something that became a bestseller.
Why does it give me three versions?
Because shops differ in what makes them worth buying from. Some have a strong origin story, some have a craft that is fascinating to read about, some are defined by who they make for. Rather than average those into one bland draft, the tool writes all three and lets you pick.
Will it make things up about my shop?
No. It is instructed not to invent awards, press mentions, years in business or sales figures. It works only from what you tell it — so the more real detail you give it, the better the result. If something in the output is not true of you, delete it.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
The About section tool is free and needs no account. You only create a free account for the full listing generator, which writes a title, description and all 13 tags at once from a photo or a sentence.
