Is My Etsy Shop Shadowbanned? What Etsy Actually Does, and the 5-Minute Test

Views fell, your listing is nowhere in search, and the forum says ‘shadowban’. Here is what Etsy actually does to a listing's visibility — in its own words — why page 1 looks like a ban when it is not, and a five-minute logged-out test that tells you which problem you really have.

Your views dropped, you searched your best phrase and scrolled four pages without finding yourself, and someone in a seller group said the word: shadowban. It is a satisfying explanation because it needs no fix from you. It is also, as far as anything Etsy publishes goes, not a thing. Etsy does reduce, remove and prioritise visibility — openly, with stated reasons — and it does show every shopper a different page. Put those together with the data below on what a normal page 1 looks like, and the mystery usually dissolves into one of three ordinary, fixable problems. The test at the end takes five minutes and tells you which.

The short version

  • Etsy publishes no ‘shadowban’. It does state visibility requirements, customer-service standards and policy removals — all of them visible to you.
  • A listing missing on page 1 is the normal state: slots 1–3 are mostly ads and only ~17% of page-1 listings were still there two months later.
  • Your own browser is the worst place to check — Etsy tailors results to the shopper and knows the listing is yours.
  • The five-minute test: three phrases, logged out, neutral vantage; then the Search Visibility page; then Stats.
  • Deleting and relisting to ‘reset’ is not a strategy; Etsy says renewing for the small boost ‘isn’t an effective search optimisation strategy’.
TL;DR

There is no shadowban in anything Etsy publishes. What exists: listings that fall short of Etsy's visibility requirements (photos, category, return policy, shipping price) ‘may be impacted’ in search; shops that miss customer-service standards get ‘lower visibility’; policy violations remove listings — and all three show up in Shop Manager, not in the dark. Everything else that looks like a ban is page 1 behaving normally: the top three slots are ads 53%, 45% and 43% of the time, roughly four in five page-1 listings rotate within two months, and your own logged-in browser shows you a personalised page. Run the five-minute test below, then follow the result to the right fix.

01What sellers mean by ‘shadowban’

The word covers four different symptoms, and the fix depends on which one you have.

  • Views dropped sharply over a few days with no change on your side.
  • A listing that used to appear for a phrase no longer does, even on page four.
  • A whole shop's listings seem to have vanished from search while the shop is still open.
  • Views are fine but sales stopped, so ‘Etsy must be hiding me from buyers’.

The first is a diagnosis problem, covered step by step in Etsy views dropped suddenly. The last is a conversion problem, not a search one. The middle two are the real ‘am I hidden?’ question, and they have a test.

02What Etsy actually does to visibility, in its words

Etsy is unusually explicit about the ways it lowers or removes visibility. From its Help Center page on the Search Visibility page, read on 6 November 2026: ‘Active listings need to meet certain requirements for a chance to receive priority placement in relevant search results.’ The requirements it lists are a listing image, a primary photo that is ‘a singular image of a finished product’, a category that is ‘as specific as possible’, a return policy, and — for US listings — ‘domestic shipping prices lower than $6 will be prioritized in search’. Then: ‘If your listing is falling short in one or more of these areas, its visibility in search may be impacted.’ And at shop level: ‘If your shop is not complete, your listings' search visibility may be impacted.’

Customer service is the second lever. ‘Meeting these standards can help you avoid lower visibility in Etsy search’, and ‘repeat violations of these standards may result in temporary or permanent suspension of your selling privileges.’ Policy is the third: ‘Abide by Etsy policies to ensure that your listings can continue to show up or be sold on Etsy.’ A listing removed for a policy reason is deactivated and you are told.

Notice what all three have in common: they are stated, they are tied to something you can see in Shop Manager, and Etsy built a page — the Search Visibility page — to flag them to you. That is the opposite of a shadow. Two more facts from Etsy's ‘How Etsy Search Works’: a new listing ‘gets a small, temporary boost in search results’ lasting ‘anywhere from a few hours to a few days’, and search takes ‘a holistic view of your listing’ across title, tags, attributes, description, first photo and reviews. A new shop that was briefly everywhere and then settled did not get banned; the boost ended.

03Why it looks like a ban: what a normal page 1 is

Most ‘shadowban’ reports come from one experience: searching your own phrase and not seeing yourself. Here is what that page actually contains, from 161 full Etsy result pages — 9,354 listings — captured logged out between September and November 2026.

  • The top row is bought. Slot 1 was a promoted listing 53.4% of the time, slot 2 44.7%, slot 3 42.9%; the second ad row (slots 10–12) was promoted 25–43% of the time. Organic results concentrate in slots 6–9. If three strangers sit above you, that is usually Etsy Ads.
  • Page 1 rotates. For 750 searches read twice about eight weeks apart, a median of only 17% of the page-1 listings were still there; in one search in five none were. (An upper bound, since the two reads did not always cover the same number of cards.) Dropping off page 1 is what most listings on it do.
  • The median search had 18,544 results. Page 1 holds about 64. Not being on it is the state of 99.7% of the listings that match.
  • Your browser lies to you. Etsy tailors results to the shopper and knows which listings are yours, so your own logged-in search is the least neutral read available — how to check your Etsy rank explains why.

None of this is a penalty. It is a crowded, rotating, personalised page, and the cure is a neutral read.

The three listings above yours are usually ads, not shops that outranked you. Organic results concentrate in slots 6–9.

Falling off page 1 is what most page-1 listings do within two months. It is rotation, not a ban.

Not being on page 1 is not a punishment. It is the default state of 99% of the listings that match a search.

04The 5-minute test

Do these in order; stop as soon as one gives you an answer.

  • Minute 1–2: pick three phrases you expect to appear for — your best one, a four-word variant, and the exact title of the listing. Run each through the free rank checker, which searches from a neutral, logged-out US vantage point and tells you the position or that the listing is beyond its coverage. If the listing shows up for its own exact title, it is indexed and visible; you have a ranking problem, not a hiding problem.
  • Minute 3: open Shop Manager → the Search Visibility page. Any listing-level flag (missing photo, non-specific category, no return policy, shipping) or a customer-service note is Etsy telling you, in writing, why visibility ‘may be impacted’. Fix those first.
  • Minute 4: check the listing itself is active and not expired, sold out, or deactivated with a policy notice. A deactivated listing is not shadowbanned; it is off.
  • Minute 5: open Stats → search terms for the last 30 days. If Etsy search still sends visits for several phrases, the shop is not hidden from search; one listing slipped for one phrase. If all Etsy-search traffic stopped on the same day, look for an event on that day: a policy email, a shipping-profile change, a mass edit.

If the exact-title search finds nothing from a neutral vantage point, the listing is active, and the Search Visibility page is clean, work through why an Etsy listing is not showing in search — eight checks in order, including the ones that fail silently.

05What to do with each result

Found, but deep. The listing is visible and competing. The fix is relevance and specificity: the phrase stated once in a title under 15 words, all 13 tags filled with the variants buyers type, a first photo that matches the phrase. Half of page 1 being ads means your organic target is slot 6 onward; our page-1 study shows a third of those slots already belong to shops with under 100 reviews. Pick phrases where they are.

Found for the exact title, not for the phrase. The listing is indexed; your phrase is simply not matched strongly enough, or several of your own listings lead with the same phrase and split the result — see Etsy keyword cannibalisation.

Flagged on the Search Visibility page. Clear the flag. Etsy says new listings missing photos or a return policy can be affected ‘immediately’, so this is often the whole story for a new shop.

Removed or deactivated with a notice. Appeal through the notice rather than relisting a copy; a relisted copy of a removed listing is the fastest route from one removed listing to a suspended shop.

Nothing found anywhere, no flag, listing active. Rare, and it is a support ticket, not a forum thread — with your screenshots from the neutral check attached.

06What not to do

Do not delete and relist to ‘reset’ the listing. A new listing starts with no history, loses its reviews and favourites, and gets only the brief new-listing boost — which Etsy itself says ends in ‘a few hours to a few days’ and adds that ‘regularly renewing your items or creating new listings just to get this small boost isn't an effective search optimisation strategy’. Do not change title, tags, photo and price in the same afternoon; if views recover you will not know why, and if they do not you will have nothing left to try — the one-change-at-a-time method is in how long after editing an Etsy listing. And do not read your own logged-in search as the truth. Check from a neutral vantage point, change one thing, wait two weeks, check again. If you want that done for you every day, with an alert the week a listing drops off page 1, that is what Rank Intelligence is for.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Etsy shadowban shops?
Nothing Etsy publishes describes a hidden, unexplained ban. Etsy does state three visible levers: listings that miss its visibility requirements (photos, specific category, return policy, US shipping under $6) ‘may be impacted’ in search; shops missing customer-service standards get ‘lower visibility’; and policy violations remove listings with a notice. All three are flagged to you in Shop Manager.
Why did my new shop get views at first and then nothing?
Etsy says a new listing ‘gets a small, temporary boost in search results’ that lasts ‘anywhere from a few hours to a few days’. When it ends, the listing settles to the position its relevance and engagement earn. That settling is routinely mistaken for a ban. The fix is the ordinary one: a clearer title, all 13 tags, a phrase with small shops already on page 1.
How do I check if my Etsy listing is hidden from search?
Search its exact title from a neutral, logged-out vantage point — the free rank checker does this — not from your own browser, which Etsy personalises. If the exact title is found, the listing is visible and you have a ranking question. If nothing is found, check the listing is active and the Search Visibility page is clean, then follow the eight checks in ‘Etsy listing not showing in search’.
Will deleting and relisting fix a shadowban?
No. It discards the listing's reviews, favourites and history in exchange for a boost Etsy says lasts hours to days, and Etsy states that relisting to chase that boost ‘isn't an effective search optimisation strategy’. If a listing was removed for a policy reason, relisting a copy can escalate to a shop suspension — appeal instead.

Not a ban — a position. Find out which one, from a neutral vantage point.
