How Long Should an Etsy Title Be? 4,369 AI-Written Titles vs 9,354 Page-1 Titles

Etsy says keep titles under 15 words; third-party guides say fill 140 characters. We measured both camps: 9,354 real page-1 titles (median 17 words) and 4,369 titles written to Etsy's 2026 guidance (median 8). Length is flat across positions 1 to 60 — here is what to do with that.

Search ‘how long should an Etsy title be’ and you get every answer between 60 and 140 characters, each stated with confidence and none with data. Etsy's own guidance since April 2026 is ‘consider using less than 15 words’. Most of page 1 ignores it. So we measured the two things that actually matter: what the titles already ranking on page 1 look like — 9,354 of them across 161 searches this autumn — and what titles written to Etsy's guidance look like, from 4,369 listings generated with ListifyAI since March. Then we checked whether length moves a listing up the page at all. It does not. What follows is the honest length answer, with the numbers.

The short version

  • Etsy: up to 140 characters, ‘consider using less than 15 words’, and where a phrase sits in the title does not affect ranking.
  • Page 1 today: median 116 characters and 17 words; 57% over 15 words; 46% in the 121–140 band.
  • Length is flat by position — 17 words at slots 1–4 and 17 at slots 49–64; bestsellers and ads: also 17.
  • Titles written to the 2026 guidance: median 52 characters, 8 words; 97% under 15 words; the pipe separator is almost gone (0.2%).
  • Real shops are split in two camps: 36% under 60 characters, 26% maxed out at 121–140 — and neither camp ranks by length.
TL;DR

The honest answer is 8 to 14 words, roughly 50 to 90 characters, with the item and its two or three defining traits in the first 50–60 characters. That is what Etsy's 2026 guidance asks for, and the data shows no ranking cost for following it: across 9,354 page-1 titles the median is 17 words whether the listing sits at position 1 or position 60. Titles written to the guidance run a median of 8 words and 52 characters. Spend the characters you save on the 13 tags, which is where Etsy itself says recipient and occasion phrases belong — see how to write Etsy titles under 15 words for the structure and the free listing score checker for a verdict on yours.

01What Etsy actually says about title length

Three facts, all from Etsy's own pages. The hard cap is 140 characters — ‘A listing's title can be up to 140 characters long.’ The recommendation, in the same help article and repeated in the April 2026 Seller Handbook guidance, is shorter than most sellers think: ‘Consider using less than 15 words when including the traits that make your item special.’ And Google, which also indexes your listing, ‘only show[s] the first 50 to 60 characters for a page title’, which is why Etsy adds: ‘include the most important traits upfront, like your item's colors, material, and size.’

Two more lines from the Keywords 101 article (as of August 2025, read 6 November 2026) settle the arguments that fill seller forums. On word order: ‘Where a phrase is used in your title doesn't affect a listing's ranking.’ On separators: ‘You can use punctuation and some symbols in your titles to separate phrases and Etsy search will still be able to read each of those phrases.’ And on the pipe-stuffed style: ‘Adding long lists of keywords to your titles may confuse buyers or turn them off your listings.’ Etsy's own before-and-after is the clearest statement of intent: the stuffed ‘Dad T-Shirt | Father Shirt | Personalised Father's Day Gift | …’ becomes ‘Personalised 100% Cotton Dad T-Shirt: Custom Kids' Names S-XL’.

02What page-1 titles actually look like

We captured 161 full Etsy result pages between 4 September and 6 November 2026 — 9,354 listing cards — from a neutral, logged-out US vantage point, and measured every title. The median page-1 title is 116 characters and 17 words. 45.9% of titles sit in the 121–140 band, which means almost half of page 1 is still written to the old ‘fill the box’ rule; only 7.6% are under 60 characters. In words, 57.3% exceed Etsy's 15-word recommendation and 19.9% exceed 20 words.

Separators tell the same story. The comma leads (50.2% of titles), the pipe is still on 18.1%, and only 12.9% of page-1 titles are a single phrase with no separator at all. 15.3% contain the word ‘gift’, 10.2% ‘personalized’ or ‘custom’, 6.8% an ALL-CAPS word. In short: page 1 is mostly long, comma-chained titles written before the guidance changed. That is the incumbent style, and the next section is about whether it is doing anything for them.

Length of real Etsy page-1 titles, in charactersShare of page-1 titles · N = 9,354 cards, 161 searches, logged-out US vantage · 4 Sep – 6 Nov 2026

Almost half of page 1 is still written to the old fill-the-box rule. Median: 116 characters, 17 words.

03Does a longer title rank higher? No.

This is the question the length debate is really about, and the answer is unusually clean. Split the 9,354 cards by position: the median title in slots 1–4 is 17 words. Slots 5–8: 17. Slots 9–16: 17. Slots 17–32, 33–48, 49–64: 17, 17, 17. Cards with a Bestseller badge: 17 words; cards without: 17. Promoted cards: 17; organic cards: 17.

Length does not vary with position because almost everyone writes the same length. It is a convention, not a lever. A listing is not at position 2 because it has 23 words, and it is not at position 60 because it has 11. The same data shows what does separate the slots, and it is not in the title at all — a third of page 1 belongs to shops with under 100 reviews, the top three slots are mostly ads, and only 12% of titles contain the exact search phrase. Those findings are in what 9,354 page-1 listings show. For the title, the practical consequence is simple: following Etsy's 15-word guidance costs you nothing in rank, and it buys you a title a buyer can read on a phone.

Flat. Bestseller cards: 17 words. Promoted cards: 17. Title length is a convention on page 1, not a ranking lever.

Seventeen words at slot 1, seventeen words at slot 60. Title length is what everybody does, not what separates them.

04What titles written to the 2026 guidance look like

The second sample is 4,369 listings generated with ListifyAI between 15 March and 6 November 2026 (test accounts excluded), where the generator has followed Etsy's April 2026 guidance since that month. Median title: 52 characters, 8 words. 97.2% are 15 words or fewer; 86.6% are 10 or fewer; 0.4% reach the 121–140 band and none exceeds 140. 56.9% are a single phrase with no separator, 23.3% use a comma, 16.3% a dash, 3.3% a colon — and 0.2% a pipe.

The guidance change is visible in the monthly data. Listings generated in March 2026, before the new rules were applied, ran a median of 102 characters and 15 words, with 57% at or under 15 words. From April the median dropped to 49 characters and 8 words and the share under 15 words went to 92%, then 98–100% from May onwards. Digital-product titles are the long ones in this set (median 14 words, 99 characters; 64.7% under 15) because a file listing has to carry format, size and licence in the title. Weekly health checks on the same listings flag a title over 15 words on 2.9% of them, a subjective word on 0.5% and a gifting phrase on 0.4% — the three things Etsy's guidance asks you to move out of the title.

Word count of titles written to Etsy’s 2026 guidanceShare of generated titles · N = 4,369 ListifyAI listings, 15 Mar – 6 Nov 2026 · Etsy recommends under 15 words

97.2% at or under 15 words; median 8 words and 52 characters. The 0.2% pipe share says the | style is effectively gone from guidance-led titles.

05Real shops are split into two camps

A third sample sits between the two above: 2,747 live listings from 67 real shops that ran the free shop audit (September–November 2026). Their titles are bimodal. 35.7% are under 60 characters — often too thin, missing the material or size a buyer would search — and 26.3% are at 121–140, maxed out in the old style. The middle, where Etsy's guidance lands, holds only about a third. Median: 73 characters, 12 words.

That split is the whole length debate in one chart: half the sellers were told to fill the box, half never got past the product name, and both halves read the forum thread that says the other half is wrong. The page-1 data says neither length is a ranking factor. The thin camp loses buyer phrases; the maxed-out camp loses readability on a phone. The fix for both is the same, and it is not a character count.

Two camps: too thin or maxed out. The middle, where Etsy’s guidance lands, holds about a third.

06So how long should your title be?

Write to coverage, not to length, and the length takes care of itself.

  • Lead with what the item is, then the two or three traits a buyer would type: colour, material, size, style. That is Etsy's ‘most important traits upfront’, and it fits inside the 50–60 characters Google shows.
  • Stop when the item is fully described to a stranger — usually 8 to 14 words. If you are past 15, you have started listing searches instead of describing the product.
  • Move recipient and occasion phrases (‘gift for her’, ‘birthday’) to the tags. Etsy's Keywords 101 puts them there explicitly, under ‘Who it's for’ and ‘Shopping occasions’. The gift keywords guide covers the phrasing.
  • Move subjective words (‘perfect’, ‘beautiful’, ‘must-have’) to the description. They match no search and Etsy asks you to keep them out of the title.
  • Drop the pipes. Etsy reads phrases either side of punctuation, so a comma works, but a buyer scanning results reads a sentence faster than a list.

A worked example from Etsy's own guidance: ‘Moonstone Ring Mini Ring Solid Gold Perfect For Women's Wedding Engagement Daily Wear Band’ becomes ‘Celestial Blue Moonstone Ring: 9k Solid Gold Band’ — 8 words, 49 characters, every searchable trait kept, every filler word gone. Twenty-five more rewrites by category are in Etsy title examples under 15 words, and a generated listing writes the title this way from a photo and fills the 13 tags with the phrases you just moved out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 140 characters still the goal for an Etsy title?
No. 140 is the hard cap, not a target. Etsy's current guidance is ‘consider using less than 15 words’ with the most important traits first, because search engines show only the first 50–60 characters of a page title. On page 1 today 46% of titles are still in the 121–140 band, but their position does not differ from shorter titles — the median is 17 words at every position from 1 to 64.
Do long Etsy titles get penalised?
Not in anything Etsy publishes, and not in the data: title length is identical across page-1 positions, bestseller badges and ads. What long titles cost is readability — Etsy says long keyword lists ‘may confuse buyers or turn them off your listings’ — and the time buyers spend reading a title on a phone. Follow the 15-word guidance for the buyer, not for the algorithm.
Should I separate phrases with | or commas?
Etsy says punctuation and some symbols are fine and search reads each phrase either side of them. But it also says long keyword lists put buyers off, and its own examples use a colon and a sentence, not pipes. Page 1 still carries the pipe on 18% of titles; titles written to the 2026 guidance use it 0.2% of the time. A comma or colon inside one readable sentence is the current style.
Does the first word of my Etsy title matter more?
For ranking, no — Etsy's Keywords 101 states ‘Where a phrase is used in your title doesn't affect a listing's ranking.’ For buyers and for Google, yes: the first 50–60 characters are what a shopper scanning results and what a search engine actually show, so lead with the item and its defining traits.
