01

First: which problem do you actually have?

Pick the one that matches your shop

Four failures feel identical from the dashboard. Pick yours — the fixes have nothing in common.

Here is the uncomfortable part. Etsy has updated its guidance on listing titles, and the change reverses the advice almost every Etsy SEO guide still repeats. In Etsy's own words: "In the past, Etsy's search placed heavy emphasis on" titles, but "our search system has evolved to take a more holistic view of your listing — including title, tags, attributes, descriptions, first photo, and even reviews." The practical consequence is blunt. If you crammed your title with every keyword you could think of because a guide told you to, you followed advice Etsy has moved away from. This post is a diagnosis, not a checklist. Every claim in it comes from Etsy's own documentation, and where Etsy publishes no number, none is invented.

Four different failures all feel like "no views", and they have nothing to do with each other. Work out which one is yours before you change anything. One: the listing has never had views. That is a query matching problem — Etsy does not yet know which searches your item belongs in, so it is not being shown at all. Two: it had views and they faded. That is usually the recency boost expiring, covered below. Three: it gets views but no sales. That is not a visibility problem and none of the SEO advice here will fix it — your photos, price or description are losing people who already found you, and ironically that failure then feeds back into ranking, because Etsy watches how well a listing converts. Four: every listing in the shop dropped at once. That is a shop-level signal, not a listing one, and the section on vacation mode is where to look first. Fixing the wrong one is why sellers rewrite titles for months and nothing moves.

02

How Etsy search actually works: two phases, not one

Etsy describes search as two distinct phases, and confusing them is the root of most bad advice. The first is query matching: a buyer types something, and Etsy assembles the pool of listings that could answer it. This phase reads your title, tags, attributes, categories and descriptions. If your listing is not in that pool, nothing else matters — no amount of good photography or fast dispatch rescues a listing that was never a candidate. The second phase is ranking, where Etsy orders the pool it just built. Here a completely different set of factors applies: relevancy, listing quality, customer service history, shipping price for US sellers, translations, and how well the listing converts. Etsy also layers on what it calls Context Specific Ranking, which shows shoppers what they are personally more likely to buy based on their habits. So "my listing is not getting views" splits cleanly in two: either you failed to enter the pool, or you entered it and got buried. The fixes are different.

03

The title advice that is now wrong

This is the section most likely to change what you do this week. Etsy's updated guidance asks for the opposite of keyword stuffing. State clearly what the item is, once — not three times in three phrasings. Put the most important traits upfront: colour, material, size. Keep it scannable, and Etsy suggests considering fewer than 15 words. Only include a holiday, occasion or recipient if it is essential to what the item actually is — "birthday candle" and "Halloween costume" qualify, "perfect gift for her birthday" does not. Move subjective words like "perfect" and "beautiful" into the description where they belong. Do not add price, shipping or sale information, because Etsy badges that itself in search results. And explicitly: avoid repeating aspirational or gifting keywords. Etsy publishes its own before-and-after examples, and one of them is a ring listed as "Moonstone Ring Mini Ring Solid Gold Perfect For Women's Wedding Engagement Daily Wear Band" — rewritten to "Celestial Blue Moonstone Ring, 9k Solid Gold Band". If your titles look more like the first than the second, they are built for a version of Etsy search that Etsy says it has moved on from. Two more details worth knowing. Your listing URL is generated from the title you publish with, and it never changes afterwards, even if you rewrite the title later. And Etsy now offers an optional AI tool that suggests updated titles from your current title, first photo and description, reachable from the search visibility dashboard — worth a look before you rewrite anything by hand.

✕ Old title — Etsy's example

Dad T-Shirt | Father Shirt | Personalized Father's Day Gift | Personalized Dad T-Shirt | Dad Statement Shirt | Father Shirt with Kids Names

The item is named five separate times and the gifting angle repeats throughout. Etsy now asks you to state what the item is once, and explicitly to avoid repetition of aspirational or gifting keywords.

✓ New title — Etsy's example

Personalized 100% Cotton Dad T-Shirt: Custom Kids' Names S-XL

Item stated once. Material and size upfront — two of the three descriptors Etsy names as most critical, alongside colour. Far under fifteen words. The gifting angle is not lost, it moves to tags, attributes and the description, where it still counts toward matching.

04

Tags: the rules, and the slots people waste

The mechanics are fixed and worth knowing exactly. You get 13 tags per listing. Each one can hold up to 20 characters. Tags accept letters, numbers and spaces, and you can use an apostrophe or a hyphen inside a word, but a tag cannot begin with either. Etsy is explicit that a tag can be a short descriptive phrase rather than a single word, and that is where slots get wasted. A one-word tag like "necklace" competes with everything on the platform and describes almost nothing about your piece. "Silver name necklace" uses the same slot to answer a far more specific search. Etsy's guidance is to use all 13 and to make them varied, because each tag is a separate chance to match a different query — thirteen near-identical tags are effectively one tag. Since the title no longer has to carry every keyword, the detail you strip out of it should not vanish; it moves here, and into your attributes and description.

The ranking factor almost nobody knows is a ranking factor

When Etsy lists what feeds listing quality, it names two things together: multiple high-quality photos, and a return policy. Not as a nicety — as part of what makes a listing rank. Elsewhere Etsy states that not having a return policy, even one that says "no returns accepted", may result in listings appearing lower in search results. Sellers outside the EU are required to set one on every physical listing regardless. This is the cheapest fix on the entire page, because it takes minutes and most shops have simply never done it. It is also worth knowing that in the EU and UK, made-to-order and clearly personalised items are excluded from the statutory 14-day cancellation right, so writing a policy does not mean accepting returns on custom work — but the exclusion only protects you if it is written into the policy before the sale.

06

Your customer service is part of your SEO

Etsy states that shops which consistently follow its customer service standards are prioritised in search, and it names the inputs: average review rating, message response rate, and case rate, measured over the past three months. That three-month window matters in both directions. A rough patch does not follow you forever, but a slow week answering messages is not a private inconvenience either — it is a search input. Etsy also names the shop itself as a factor, down to having a shop icon, on the reasoning that buyers want to know who they are buying from. If you have been treating your shop branding and your inbox as separate from SEO, they are not.

07

Two things Etsy says do NOT help, in its own words

Both of these get sold as ranking tactics in seller groups, and Etsy denies both directly. Subscribing to Etsy Plus does not influence where listings appear in Etsy search. And Star Seller does not directly impact the ordering of search results — Etsy positions it as a trust signal to buyers that can drive conversion, which is a real but indirect effect, not a ranking lever. If you were paying for Plus expecting visibility, that is not what you are buying. The distinction matters because conversion genuinely is a ranking input, so anything that makes buyers more comfortable can help you indirectly. Just do not confuse the two paths.

08

Why a listing gets views for a few days and then goes quiet

Etsy gives new listings a small, temporary boost in search so it can learn how buyers interact with them and work out the listing's engagement rate. Renewed listings get a similar but smaller boost. Etsy says this lasts anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on how often people search for that kind of item. This explains the single most common pattern sellers report: a burst of views on day one, then nothing. The boost was not your ranking — it was Etsy running an experiment on your listing. What happened during that window decided what came next. If nobody favourited, added to cart or bought, Etsy learned that the listing does not convert for those searches. This is also why renewing listings is not a strategy. The renewal boost is smaller than the original, it costs $0.20 each time, and it does not change the thing that made buyers scroll past.

09

If your whole shop dropped at once

One shop-level cause is documented and catches people by surprise: vacation mode. Etsy explains that when you come back, you may not see the same traffic as before, because while you were away it continued gathering data on how buyers interact with other listings while your own engagement rates stayed frozen. You did not get penalised. The rest of the market kept moving and your listings did not. The other shop-level lever is language. Etsy translates your keywords for shoppers in other languages, but says translations you write yourself tend to be higher quality and more natural, and therefore often outperform machine translations.

What to actually do this week

In order, because the order matters. First, confirm which of the four problems from the top of this post you have — a conversion problem is invisible to every fix below it. Second, if any listing lacks a return policy, add one today; it is minutes of work against a stated search consequence. Third, rewrite one title to the new guidance: item stated once, colour, material and size upfront, under 15 words, no gifting-keyword repetition. Do not rewrite all of them at once — change one, note the date, and let it run so you can tell whether the change did anything. Fourth, move the detail you removed into tags and attributes, using all 13 slots with genuinely different phrases. Fifth, add alt text to your images, which Etsy recommends for accessibility and because it helps Google understand what is in the picture. And if you have video, Etsy allows up to two per listing and notes they may surface in Google's video results. None of this is fast. Etsy's own note on its guidance is that search is always changing and its recommendations are current best practice, not permanent law.

Add alt text to your images, and video if you have it — Etsy allows up to two per listing.

Questions

How long should an Etsy title be in 2026?

Etsy's updated guidance asks you to streamline for clarity and suggests considering fewer than 15 words. State what the item is once, put colour, material and size upfront, and leave subjective and gifting language out. Note separately that search engines like Google typically display only the first 50 to 60 characters of a page title, so the most important traits should come first regardless.

Does renewing a listing help it get views?

Only briefly, and less than publishing it did. Etsy gives renewed listings a boost similar to but smaller than a new listing's, lasting from a few hours to a few days. It costs $0.20 each time and does not change whatever caused buyers to scroll past. If the listing was not converting during its original boost, renewing repeats the same experiment.

Do I really need a return policy to rank?

Etsy names a return policy alongside multiple high-quality photos as part of listing quality, and states that not having one — even a policy of "no returns accepted" — may result in listings appearing lower in search results. Sellers outside the EU are required to set one on every physical listing regardless.

Does Etsy Plus or Star Seller improve my search ranking?

No, on both counts, according to Etsy. It states that subscribing to Etsy Plus does not influence where listings appear in search, and that Star Seller does not directly impact the ordering of results. Star Seller can help indirectly by increasing buyer trust and therefore conversion, and conversion is a ranking input — but it is not a direct lever.

I get views but no sales. Is that an SEO problem?

No, and treating it as one wastes months. Views mean query matching and ranking are already working. The loss is happening after the click, in your photos, price or description. It does matter for search eventually, because Etsy looks at how well a listing converts when deciding how to rank it — so a conversion problem left alone slowly becomes a visibility problem too.

Your title has one job now. Your tags have thirteen.

Every factor above starts with the listing itself — a clear title, 13 varied tags, and a description that answers what buyers ask. ListifyAI writes all three from a photo or a sentence, following Etsy's current guidance rather than the keyword-stuffing advice it moved away from. Try it free, no account needed.
